It’s easy to float through life and work reacting to things.

But if you want to get what you want out of life, you’ve first got to figure out what it is, exactly that you want to get.

Get it?

Think in concrete terms – not fluffy marketing/branding/business garbage that you’ve been reading in self-help books.

Besides “for the money”, why do you go to work?

I work so that I can be present at home with my kids and wife.  Physically and emotionally present.  No devices.  No urgent customer requests.  No email.  Present.

Need some help?  Read How To Find Fulfilling Work.

Finding your “why” for life and work is a journey that takes intention, curiosity, and thought.

Get clear about your personal values and your business values (they need to inform each other).

If you think you work “to buy a huge house in the suburbs”, ask yourself, “Why do I want a house in the suburbs?”

If you answer, “Because I need more space,” ask yourself, “Why do I need more space?”

If you answer, “To house my family and boat,” ask yourself, “Why do I need a family and boat?”

You get the idea: Get curious and build a mindset of innovation.

You’ll be surprised at the result.

You might discover that the reason you want a big house in the suburbs is because your parents withheld food from you as a kid, and you are scared you might feel that way again.

Maybe you want that new car, because you were bullied in highschool, and you are trying to prove to yourself and to your family and to your friends that you are worth a damn.  (You are.)

Maybe you are working because you just can’t think of anything better to do, and this is what people do.

Whatever your reason, get curious.
